A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence (2014)
Roy Andersson's Golden Bear-winning film is composed of a succession of vignettes which range from slightly odd to wilfully absurd, offering a downbeat worldview that combines the hilarious with the horrific. Loosely framed around the exploits of a pair of travelling salesmen haplessly attempting to peddle novelty goods, the 37 scenes are otherwise unconnected, covering events as disparate as a predatory flamenco teacher manhandling one of her students, and a ferry's canteen worker attempting to give away a dead man's meal. Underscoring much of the film is a jaunty soundtrack which adds to the comic surrealism of the piece, while the static cameras used throughout lend a stillness and peculiar distance to the proceedings. First screening on Channel 4.
