Henry King's drama stars John Hodiak as tough US Army Major Joppolo, who faces problems when he is put in charge of a small town in Sicily at the end of World War II. In spite of suspicion bred by the previous fascist regime, he gradually wins the cooperation of the citizens, and prevents the lynching of the former fascist mayor, but deals firmly with others who backed Mussolini. Food is a major problem, but even more urgent is the town's request for a new bell to replace the old one that was taken away to be melted down for munitions. And Joppolo's problems are further complicated when he falls in love with local girl Tina.
