This 1970 bio-pic, based on Ludovic Kennedy's book about sordid murderer John Christie, doesn't pull any flashy punches. It doesn't need to. The facts surrounding the infamous Christie murders are chilling enough, and director Richard Fleischer's underplayed treatment is more than appropriate.
Richard Attenborough turns in a solid, understated performance as Christie. Also notable are John Hurt - as Timothy John Evans (the man who may - or may not - have been wrongly sent to the gallows) and Judy Geeson as Beryl Evans.
