They will broadcast the first two episodes back-to-back on the 2nd June, starting at 19:30hrs and the remaining two episodes on Sunday 3rd June 2001 which will be broadcast from 18:30hrs. This is a powerful four-part drama set in the 1950's and has been based on the novel by Maeve Binchy. It focuses on a young woman's attempt to escape the conventions of the small, Irish coastal town of Castlebay. Clare O'Brien (Siobhan Garahy) is a precocious student who seems to have acheived her dreams of escape from small-town life when she wins a scholarship to University in Dublin. Talked into this by her teacher, Angela O' Hara (Geraldine James) who sacrificed her own dreams for her family. Once there, however, she embarks on a passionate relationship with David Power, son of Castlebay's doctor and a fellow student. This affair has devastating results for Claire, however, and the repercussions echo throughout their home town as his mother doesn't agree with this mix of class. But David isn't the only one who loves Clare - she has also become the focal point of Gerry Doyle's (Stephen Holland) unhealthy attention. Soon, everything gets more complicated as Clare and David are forced to make serious decisions that bring them back home. In the meantime, Angela deals with her wayward priest of a brother, town gossips, and grows closer a recovering alcoholic. Will anyone find happiness in Castle Bay?
