Richard Wilson joins the cast as a new doctor who arrives in Ormston, much to the dismay of Tom who learns the newcomer's timely appearance has been engineered by his father. Their working relationship gets off to a bad start too, when they bicker over how to treat a case of polio. Elsewhere, Wilf's plans for a double wedding are nipped in the bud by Jean, and the Cosgroves struggle to cope with their foster-daughter's hi-jinks, while Deborah and Phyllis unearth the truth behind the village-wide eviction notices
