Tonight: Can We Trust the Police?

Series 22, episode 0

In 2013, a succession of allegations surrounding Plebgate - the incident which led to Andrew Mitchell losing his job in the Cabinet - cast the police in a poor light. Added to that were the falsification of crime figures, statements that were changed in the wake of the Hillsborough disaster, attempts made to smear the family and friends of Stephen Lawrence and opportunities that were missed to prosecute child grooming gangs. To what extent has public confidence been dented by this succession of damaging allegations and revelations? A survey of 2,000 people, commissioned by Tonight, revealed that 20 per cent did not believe that the police were on their side, while 40 per cent of those questioned thought that corruption was a problem within the service. Fiona Foster speaks to people who feel they have been failed by the police, and examines what some forces are doing to try and regain the public's trust.
