The closest the USA has come to having a socialist president, Roosevelt became the youngest president ever when he came to power after McKinley's assassination. A popular leader, he made a mistake on the eve of his re-election that would haunt him for the rest of his life. Roosevelt shocked the nation by announcing that he would not stand for re-election after his second term, but went on to build the Panama Canal, became the first American to win the Nobel Peace Prize, and introduced wide-ranging social reform.
