In the season of big, live orchestras and operas, New Generation Thinker Seán Williams opens up the story of the music box, a supposedly kitsch item that has inspired authors and composers. Starting his journey in the borderlands of Switzerland and Germany, where 19th-century music boxes were the creations of clockmakers, Seán realises that the real point lies much closer to home and returns to see the collection of John Phillips from the Musical Box Society of Great Britain in rural Worcestershire
