I Was There

Documentary in which journalist Kate Adie re-examines her historic coverage of the massacre in Tiananmen Square, Beijing, in June 1989. Kate tells how she was wounded by gunfire and narrowly escaped death herself, as an estimated 2,000 pro-democracy demonstrators were shot down by Chinese government troops. Drawing on the BBC film archive, she also assesses how China has been portrayed before and after the period of upheaval, with additional insight from leading historian Prof Steve Tsang.
