After 32 weeks of the toughest military training in the world, the successful recruits from 924 Troop arrive in Afghanistan. There they join Second Lieutenant Bertie Kerr's men, going on sentry duty and beginning day and night patrols. We see their reactions to the reality of Afghanistan and meet the battle-hardened marines of 11 Troop. They are still reeling from the death of Tom Curry, killed in action during an assault on a Taliban stronghold.
