Around the World in 80 Days

First shown in 1989, this was a hit travelogue series, presented by Monty Python comedian and actor Michael Palin. Inspired by Jules Verne's classic novel, Palin used the same deadline of 80 days to circumnavigate the globe. He tried to stick as closely as possible to Phileas Fogg's route, using only transport that existed in Verne's time.

The success of the series enabled Palin to develop his career as a TV presenter. More travelogue series followed, including Pole to Pole, Full Circle, Sahara, Himalaya and New Europe.
