Grand Designs: Hackney

Series 1, episode 0

Kevin McCloud joins John and Eleni Flood as they attempt to turn their cluttered and cramped Victorian terraced house in Hackney into a cool, contemporary, light and roomy living space, complete with plenty of glass and white walls. Leaving the façade intact, they rip the rest of the house apart, removing all internal walls, cornices and ceilings - revolutionising the structure of their home. But restoration on this scale always throws up nasty surprises. The builders discover that remedial damp work is required, all the main walls need replastering and the roof tiles will have to be replaced. Can a 150-year-old house really be reborn as a 21st Century designer dream home?
