Natural World: Puerto Rico: Island of Enchantment

Series 37, episode 1

David Attenborough presents the wildlife of Puerto Rico, a tropical island in the Caribbean. After being colonised by humans, its rich natural resources were rapidly exploited for agriculture, industry and urban development. Now a conservation movement is fighting to protect the island's native animals from extinction. Tony Mignucci runs a Manatee Conservation Centre. The film follows him as he rehabilitates two juvenile manatees. Jafet Velez manages the Puerto Rican Parrot Recovery Programme. We follow him rearing and releasing his biggest ever flock of 24 birds into the rainforest. Carlos Diez is a passionate protector of Puerto Rico's five native species of oceanic turtle. We see the turtles laying their eggs and the eggs hatching whilst Carlos fights his case in the Puerto Rican courts. Through the eyes of these three main protagonists and the animals they protect, this film shows a snapshot of Puerto Rico's people and wildlife as they turn the tide in favour of the environment.
