In the decade since Perseus (Sam Worthington), bastard son of Zeus (Liam Neeson), destroyed the monstrous Kraken, he has built a quaint life in a remote fishing village. However, fate is to call him into action once again when the gods, weakened by the waning faith of humans, begin to power over the ferocious Titans. The gods' greatest foes have been locked in the mighty prison of Tartarus but, under the leadership of the terrible Kronos, threaten to break out and lay waste to Greece.
When Zeus is betrayed by his scheming brother Hades (Ralph Fiennes) and son Ares, Perseus joins with Poseidon (Danny Huston), and prepares to raise an army against the treacherous enemy.
While 2010's Clash of the Titans struggled under the expectation of following up a revered 1981 rendition, this spectacular sequel has no such shadow to step out from. Worthington returns as the hero in a feature that is again more style than substance, with mythical beasts and ancient landscapes bursting onto screen using astounding CG effects.
Avid film fans may yearn for the characterful stop-animation adventures of days gone by, but there is no denying that this action-packed modern odyssey uses its SFX budget to full potential.
