Long before he aided ogres in fairy tale quests against evil Lords, swashbuckling feline Puss (voiced by Antonio Banderas) was carving a living stealing trinkets as an outlaw. His latest task is to get his paws on some magic beans which could lead to a giant's castle where valuable golden goose eggs are to be found.
Learning that siblings Jack (Billy Bob Thornton) and Jill (Amy Sedaris) have the beans, he tries to swipe them, but is thwarted by another mysterious masked intruder.
Battling this new foe for the beans, Puss is shocked to learn that she is a female cat named Kitty Softpaws (Salma Hayek), egged on by Puss's childhood friend Humpty Alexander Dumpty (Zach Galifianakis). When Dumpty recognises his old pal, the trio come to an agreement to chase down the goose eggs together, but can they beat Jack and Jill to the treasure?
Realising that cash-cow Shrek couldn't be milked any longer, Dreamworks cleverly opens up the cat-flap for one of the more popular characters from the franchise. Banderas and Hayek pair up for the sixth time since 1995's Desperado, and their off-screen friendship permeates through to create a charming partnership.
While the story is a bit thin, there are enough clever gags to keep this fairytale alive. Behind the scenes experienced hands combined impressively to help Puss In Boots earn a well-deserved Oscar nomination.
