Tom Hanks gives a fantastic performance in this Oscar'-nominated tale based on true events.
Hanks stars as Richard Phillips, a container ship captain whose vessel is hijacked by pirates off the coast of Somalia. Led by Abduwali Muse (Barkhad Abdi), the gang hold up the boat, hoping to get a big pay-off from the shipping company.
However, when they are forced to turn their attentions to the captain, they hold him for ransom in a lifeboat, leaving Phillips locked in a battle of wits and wills with his captors.
Acclaimed director Paul Greengrass follows up 2010's Green Zone with this lauded account of the 2009 Maersk Alabama hijacking.
Having also directed 9/11 drama United 93, Greengrass again shows his flair for works based on real events, combining tense thrills with powerful character moments to great success.
Captain Phillips also benefits from a pair of accomplished performances from contrasting ends of the experience spectrum; Hanks earned a Golden Globe nomination for one of his best performances of recent years, while newcomer Abdi has been rewarded with a BAFTA for his eye-catching acting debut.
