Four decades ago Cambodia suffered one of the worst atrocities of the twentieth century. 1.7 million people were killed during the Khmer Rouge's four-year reign of terror. As well as the mass murders, hundreds of thousands of family member were forcibly separated from each other by Pol Pot's government, which did not believe in the institution of the family, and instead demanded loyalty to the state.
