The fate of Swissair flight 111 from New York to Geneva on September 2, 1998, which crashed into the sea near Halifax, Nova Scotia, after fire broke out in the cockpit at 33,000ft. Despite the actions of the captain and crew, air traffic controllers could do nothing but watch in horror as the plane plummeted into the water, killing all 229 people on board.
