Patrice LeConte's FilmFour-funded fact-based mid-19th century drama is set on a small French island off the Newfoundland coast. There, Neel Auguste is convicted of a drunken murder and must be guillotined, but the island has to wait for one to come by ship. Neel, given his freedom to roam, is taken to Madame La, wife of the captain of the military presence, who asks him to tend the garden. The pair grow close; she is alienated from her homeland, he from society. Auteuil, however, refuses to intervene, sure in his wife's love for him. Delicately drawn and beautifully shot, this is not about a crude ménage-a-trois but a story about the strength of true love and the hope of change through redemption.
