Ever cynical and incredibly sexy 16 year old Louisiana girl, Dedee Truitt (Christina Ricci) moves in with her very wealthy, homosexual, high-school teacher, half-brother Bill Truitt (Martin Donovan) after her step-fathers death, giving her the perfect opportunity to escape her troubled life.
On her arrival she immediately starts to seduce Bill's good-looking partner, Matt Mateo (Ivan Sergei), forcing him into an affair and then announces that he has made her pregnant. The whole affair soon blows into a huge scandal which exposes her brother to false accusations of past sexual misconduct at school, by Jason Bock (Matt's bitter ex, played by Johnny Galecki), this story of course causes a great deal of media interest.
To make matters worse Dedee has talked Matt into stealing $10,000 of Bill's money and the pair run away to Los Angeles, followed closely by Sheriff Carl Tipett (Lyle Lovett). As the whole situation snowballs, the only person who sees what Dedee is really up to is Bill's rather frustrated acid-tongued sister Lucia Delury (Lisa Kudrow). Soon, the biological parent of the child is called into question as it is revealed that Dedee has had a series of lovers prior to Matt.
This film sees the cast learning valuable lessons in life, and love as they confront and explore their true sexuality, they learn to let go of their traditional beliefs and discover what they truly want in life, 'The Opposite of Sex' - lasting, committed and very loving and caring relationships.
