Finnish director Jalmari Helander wishes everyone a twisted Christmas with this eccentric, inventive and somewhat gory action-comedy take on the Father Christmas myth. In the frigid wastes of northern Finland, an American team excavating an ancient site uncover the ritual burial of a horned figure. Unfortunately, as our pre-teen hero Pietari Kontio quickly works out, the archaeologists have dug up the frozen body of Santa Claus - whose true, cannibalistic nature has been forgotten during his aeons of icebound imprisonment. Once the evil being has thawed out, children from the surrounding villages start to go missing and herds of reindeer are found slaughtered. At which point Pietari persuades his father Rauno that they can outwit Santa and bring his rampage to an end. But can they also deal with Santa's little helpers? It all adds up to a loopy, slightly scary antidote to seasonal sentimentality.
