Oh! What a Lovely War (1969)
Richard Attenborough's directorial debut was this Bafta award-winning adaptation of Joan Greenwood's anti-war musical satire for the stage, which uses music hall songs from the time of the Great War to highlight and counterpoint its stupidity, horrors and waste. Shot largely in Brighton, including the now-derelict West Pier, the stylised narrative both tells the conflict's history from the lofty, disconnected viewpoint of Europe's political leaders and their generals, and also demonstrates the war's human costs via the experiences of one ordinary British family, the Smiths, who are fated to feel the full brunt of the carnage. The cast's galaxy of stars includes Ralph Richardson, John Gielgud, John Mills, Laurence Olivier, Jack Hawkins, Maggie Smith, Susannah York, Ian Holm, Edward Fox, Dirk Bogarde, Kenneth More and Vanessa, Corin and Michael Redgrave.
