Mary, Queen of Scots (1971)

Directed by
Charles Jarrott

Oscar-nominated Vanessa Redgrave and Glenda Jackson star in Charles Jarrott's historical drama about the tussle for power in Tudor Britain. When young Catholic Mary Stuart arrives back in Scotland after the death of her husband, French monarch Francis II, she finds her nation torn between Catholicism and Protestantism, and her own right to rule undermined from without and within. Mary's Protestant half-brother James Stewart intends to use her as a figurehead while he runs the country in her name. Meanwhile, Queen Elizabeth I is sensitive to her cousin's claim to the English throne and dispatches two suitors, the Protestant Robert Dudley and the Catholic Lord Darnley, north of the border, hoping romantic intrigue will keep Mary from pursuing any regal ambitions outside of Scotland. And it works. But Mary's choice unwittingly places her on course to disaster. Co-starring Ian Holm, Nigel Davenport and Trevor Howard.
