In this animated adventure, dreamy young barn owl Soren (Jim Sturgess) spends his days recounting tales of the legendary warrior owls known as the Guardians of Ga'Hoole, much to his brother Kludd's (Ryan Kwanten) annoyance. When the two are knocked out of their nest and onto the forest floor, they are snatched by evil owls and taken to the lair of a sinister sect known as the Pure Ones. Headed by sinister owls Metalbeak (Joel Edgerton) and Nyra (Helen Mirren), the Pure Ones believe themselves superior to their brethren and put them to work as warriors or menial workers.
While Kludd is recruited as a soldier, Soren is given the unsavoury task of rooting through owl pellets for precious metals that can be used to power the sect's super-weapon. Meeting elf owl Gylfie (Emily Barclay), an expert navigator, Soren stages an escape with the help of sympathetic guard Grimble (Weaving) and the two young owls journey to the sanctuary of the Guardians of Ga'Hoole to get help.
As Kludd is seduced by the evil propaganda of The Pure Ones, Soren and Gylfie are tutored in the ways of the Guardians by eccentric owl Ezylryb (Geoffrey Rush). As the Guardians and their two new recruits head to the stronghold of the Pure Ones to free their fellow owls, the scene is set for an epic confrontation that will pit brother against brother.
