Julien Temple's tribute to Joe Strummer (pictured), one of Britain's most influential musicians. Strummer was best known as the front man of The Clash. He mellowed in later life, fronting his new band, the Mescaleros.
Temple's advantage is that as a chronicler of punk from its earliest days (his credits include The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle and The Filth and the Fury), he could call on his own archive footage as well as that shot by others over the years.
Added to the mix are animations of Strummer's drawings and cartoons, interviews with the man himself and tributes from fans including Johnny Depp, Martin Scorsese and John Cusack. The film is no hagiography; Temple presents Strummer's occasional unpleasant, hypocritical side, but that adds balance to this meticulous portrait of the man and his work.
