The Middle Classes is a Documentary programme.

The Middle Classes

A hundred years ago, less than one fifth of the UK population could be descrbed as middle class; today , nearly three quarters believe they fit into that category. Like them or loathe them, the middle classes are now the backbone of Britain.

This programme charts the rise of a complex social stratum to reveal a tale of snobbery and suburbia, empire and education, professionalism and parochialism, influence and power.

The series begins in the leafy suburb of Headingley, Leeds. Ashwood Villas is a pretty terrace of late-Victorian houses which, in the 1870's, attracted the growing numbers of professionals and managers enriched by industry - the new middle class of people.
