The Jesse Martin Story

On 31 October 1999 Martin broke a world record, as the youngest person ever to sail round the world solo, non-stop and unassisted.

One advantage of being 18 is that you don't know the meaning of the word impossible. But how many 18-year-olds could endure eleven months of isolation on a yacht, facing waves that could be as a high as a two-storey building and temperatures as low as minus 10? When sailing solo you can't afford to sleep for more than twenty minutes at a time - otherwise you might collide with another vessel. And there's always the possibility of pirate attacks.

Not only is Jesse Martin no ordinary young man - he has no ordinary family. They were behind him all the way and even mortgaged the house to pay for his yacht Lionheart! This is an inspiring story, which should encourage everyone to put a little adventure into their lives.
