Meet the Penguins is a Documentary programme.
Meet the Penguins
A one-off special in which Adrian Walls, head of birds at ZSL London Zoo, fulfils a lifelong dream to see an endangered species of penguin in the wilds of Peru. Adrian has looked after penguins throughout his 25 years as a zookeeper but has never seen them in their natural environment on the Pacific coast of Peru in South America. With penguin numbers now under threat, having fallen from 20,000 in the 1980s to just 5,000 in 2000, Adrian hopes to see first-hand what is being done to save his favourite - and one of nature's most charismatic - animal. Adrian meets local experts and discovers that the penguins are threatened by climate change and habitat destruction, as well as getting trapped in fishing nets and being taken as pets or to be eaten. He travels through the coastal deserts of Peru to see thousands of Humboldt penguins in their natural habitat, where they risk their lives every day passing predator seals on the beach to get to their cliff-top nesting grounds.
