Grass (1999)

This documentary, presented by actor Woody Harrelson, chronicles the history of marijuana use in 20th century America. It explores the American government's official policy on marijuana.

It includes the crusade of Harry Anslinger, who waged a life-long war against marijuana use in the States.

By the 50s and 60s, attitudes towards the drug had changed with some states relaxing their laws on the substance, but the Reagan administration's hard line against all drugs caused another social shift in the 80s.

Rising with nativist xenophobia with Mexican immigration and their taste for smoking marijuana, we see the establishment of a wrong headed federal drug policy as a crime issue as oppposed to a public health approach.

Perpetually fuelled by prejudice, hysteria driven propaganda and political opportunism undeterred by voices of reason on the subject, this film follows the story of a costly and futile crusade against a natural substance with questionable ill effects, plenty of positive effects for Multiple Sclerosis sufferers, that has damaged basic civil liberites.
