JohnPeel takes a personal journey through the sights and sounds of a remarkable building which this month is celebrating its 50th birthday.

His journey takes viewers from the wasteland to Meltdown with highlights from both the 50th Birthday Gala and - the climax of the evening - Total Meltdown. In between there's a chance to see "A People's Place", a documentary telling the story of the Royal Festival Hall, with archive performances by musicians associated with the venue including Maria Callas and Igor Stravinsky.

The 50th Birthday Gala concert held on the 3rd May - broadcast live on BBC Radio 3 - featured music from Beethoven, Schumann, Verdi and Puccini. Valery Gergiev conducts the Philharmonia Orchestra with guest appearances from Murray Perahia (piano) , Angela Gheorghiu (soprano), Marcello Giordani (tenor) and Dmitri Hvorostovsky (baritone).

Artists performing in the avant-garde dream factory that is Meltdown include Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Elvis Costello, Lauire Anderson, David Thomas and Two Pale Boys, and the music includes pieces by Magnus Lindberg, George Benjamin and Louis Andriessen.
