It's the biggest night of the year for British comedy, when the UK's top comedic talents come together to celebrate the triumphs of the past 12 months. Jonathan Ross hosts this year's British Comedy Awards live on Channel 4 from the O2 Arena.
Before a room of comedic greats, Jonathan reveals the winners from the 13 categories including the new gold award that will crown the King or Queen of Comedy 2010, as voted by the public. Plus there are more new categories with a greater focus on celebrating the country's best comedy performers. In addition to Best Comic Actor & Actress, and Best Comedy Entertainment Personality, there will be recognition of the Best Male & Female TV Comic for the first time ever. And as always a gang of A-List guests will keep the winners and audience on their toes.
Celebrities who have presented awards in the past include Madonna, Jack Black, J.K. Rowling, Vivienne Westwood, Robbie Williams, Pamela Anderson and Stephen Hawking. With this year being the awards show's 21st year, there is sure to be a host of big names present to celebrate the best of British comedy.
Voting in the British Comedy Awards is carried out in two stages. Firstly, the broadcasters submit lists of all eligible nominees which are placed on a secure on-line voting website where the 300+ members of The British Comedy Academy vote to create the shortlists. The top 5 in each category are then discussed and voted for by the British Comedy Awards Jury. The members of the Jury this year include Shane Allen, Head of Comedy for Channel 4, Lucy Lumsden, Head of Comedy Commissioning for Sky, Sharon Lougher, Editor of Metro, and Boyd Hilton, Editor of Hear Magazine. Comedians Roisin Conaty, Ronni Ancona and Bob Mills will also be placing their votes.
Following straight on from Channel 4's British Comedy Awards show, presenters Lauren Laverne and Rick Edwards gatecrash the after-show party and force the biggest stars in comedy into a headlock position to get all the gossip from the night. They also inform the winners and losers what viewers are saying about them on Twitter. It's the one party that no one wants to miss!
