Moone Boy

Back in 2012, Chris O'Dowd and Nick Vincent Murphy charmed critics and viewers alike with their semi-autobiographical coming-of age comedy set in the small Irish town of Boyle in 1989.

Following the adventures of 12-year-old Martin Moone, the twinkly-eyed series celebrated family life as he set about growing up amid his chaotic clan - mum Debra, dad Liam and older sisters Fidelma, Trisha and Sinead - ably assisted by imaginary friend Sean Murphy, who was always on hand with some not-so-wise words of advice. Now, with both an IFTA and an International Emmy Award under its belt, Moone Boy is back for round two, delivering more whimsical nostalgia and laugh-out-loud humour than you can shake a stick at.

It's summer 1990 and football fever sweeps the nation as the Republic of Ireland play in the World Cup finals for the first time. Spirits are high and everyone is getting behind Jack's Army, especially in Boyle where the Moone family are well and truly gripped by Italia 90. Everyone except Liam, that is. He'd rather take the clan away on holiday than pay attention to a foreign sport. Martin is appalled with his father - he wants to watch Ireland's vital tie with Romania on home turf, not in Donegal - and Debra isn't best pleased, either, but Liam gets his way and the Moones head off on their summer getaway, with Dessie and Padraic in tow.

Martin's determined to watch the match on Boyle soil, however, so with Sean Murphy at his side, he sets out to thumb a lift back home. But passing cars are few and far between and, as kick-off gets closer, Martin and Sean need a plan B. A nearby house proudly flying football colours would be just that, only the residents aren't quite what they expect. The rest of the family, meanwhile, enjoy the match from the comfort of a pub, blissfully unaware they're missing their youngest member.
