In present-day London, mysterious mind-reader Doctor Parnassus (Christopher Plummer) leads an unpopular travelling theatre troupe, consisting of his teenage daughter Valentina (Lily Cole), a magician (Spider-Man-in-waiting Andrew Garfield) and a dwarf (Verne Troyer). Parnassus's lacklustre side show, however, is merely a ruse to entice people into his magical mirror, a contraption which enables people to enter the depths of their imagination, and allows Parnassus to claim their souls.
With Valentina's 16th birthday approaching, old enemy Mr Nick (Tom Waits) reminds Parnassus that a wager they once made is soon to be settled. In exchange for his eternal youth, Parnassus agreed to sell Valentina's soul to him. The devilish Nick, however, decides to propose one more bet. Whoever can acquire five souls first will get ownership of Valentina's. Parnassus is dejected at the likely loss of his daughter, until he happens upon the help of the charismatic Tony (Heath Ledger). Recruiting him to charm customers into their trap, Parnassus and his crew race to capture the five souls they need - in order to save the most precious one of all.
