It's the future, and most of Earth's population has been taken over by alien body snatchers known as Souls.
While most people eventually submit to being inhabited, teenager Melanie (Saoirse Ronan) has refused to let go of her old self, leaving both her human persona and that of her alien Soul, Wanderer, existing inside her body. With just a small group of humans left, villainous 'Seeker' Terra (Diane Kruger) wants Wanderer to track them down.
However, the band of survivors consists of Melanie's brother Jamie (Chandler Canterbury), uncle Jeb (William Hurt) and former boyfriend Jared (Max Irons).
With a scrappy teenage heroin, a couple of hunky love interests and some otherworldy goings-on, this is no doubt an attempt to kick start another franchise with the box office clout of Meyer's Twilight Saga.
While The Host doesn't look set to provoke quite the same level of hyperventilating mania as R-Patz and co, it's a serviceable sci-fi tale placed in the experienced hands of Andrew Niccol, and boasts a classy performance from its talented leading lady.
