Based on Fannie Flagg's novel, this feelgood female drama with comic touches won two Oscar nominations. Released in 1991, it builds slowly (and with slightly confusing flashbacks) to focus on female friendships from different eras.

Kathy Bates is superb as overweight, repressed housewife Evelyn Couch, whose husband clearly doesn't understand her. While visiting a cantankerous aunt in an convalescent home in Birmingham, Alabama, Evelyn is befriended by quirky octogenarian Ninny Threadgoode (played with great aplomb by Jessica Tandy). During their meetings, Ninny tells Evelyn tales of her past at her nearby home town, Whistle Stop.

Super, often quite emotional stuff.
