This film follows Marty Starr's (Rik Mayall) jinxed attempts to wipe the million-dollar smile off the face of superstar Marla Dorland (Jane Horrocks).
Marla is the beautiful and sexy singer who is a legend in her own time due to her angel-like voice. Marty is the founder of Purple Starr Records and he is the man who transformed Marla into the household name that she is, and even changed her name from Mavis Davis.
However, things aren't looking good for either of them. Marla has aged, her record sales have fallen dramatically and most of her fans have converted to Alanis Morissette. Marty has had his house repossessed, his Jaguar blown up and his life threatened by two henchmen, and just to put the icing on his life, his ex-wife is on his case regarding three month's unpaid alimony.
Marty starts to see no way out of his current predicament. However whilst listening to the Elvis Presley song 'The Wonder of You' he suddenly comes up with a brilliant idea. Elvis, John Lennon, Kurt Cobain all revived their failing careers through dying and found untold wealth in their afterlife. Now all he has to do is stage a tragic ending for Marla and then just sit back and watch the money roll in.........what could be simpler?
