Tsunami: Caught on Camera

On Christmas Day 2004, across the Indian Ocean, tourists from around the globe were enjoying dream holidays in the sun. But none of them knew that the very next day their video cameras would capture one of the most devastating natural disasters in recorded history, which would leave nearly 250,000 dead in 14 countries.

Five years on, told almost entirely using amateur footage, much of it never broadcast before, this documentary is the moving true story of the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami told through the eyes of those who were there. Shot by ordinary people across the tsunami's huge impact area, the remarkable amateur footage reveals what happened when the waves, caused by a massive underwater earthquake, hit land.

This powerful, bold and intimate film reveals what it was like to be caught up in the events of that day and tells stories of panic and heart-breaking loss, as well as courage and miraculous survival. Kim and Tristan Peatfield were in Sri Lanka with their five-year-old daughter, Isabella. When the wave came to their bungalow, Kim grabbed Isabella and held her tight, but the water was just too powerful. Will Robins and his American wife Amanda were on honeymoon on the idyllic Phi Phi island. The wave washed everything away and they found themselves bobbing on the surface of the water, Will with a broken collar bone and Amanda unable to move her legs. German tourists Stefan and Kristin Kuhn were in Thailand with their two young children. A mesmerised Stefan filmed the wave as it approached the beach, before realising the danger, grabbing his children and running for their lives.
